Right now the user count Lemmys is comparatively tiny when held up against reddit - but the user count isn’t the thing that makes a social media site, it’s the engagement
So even if you’re used to lurking, try to get a little more active! Post memes, vote on posts, talk in the comments, whatever!
If people come here and see activity, content, and discussions, they’re more likely to stay and contribute their own - if they come and see a ghost town, they’ll just go back to reddit
So, should we recreate our favorite subreddits too get them going?
Absolutely! Our join already created versions on other instances of they exist!
@BoringToMyself @bitsplease Absolutely! The best way to get folks moved is through creation of their favorite subs in the #fediverse. Show them a viable alternative exists, runs mostly well, and they’ll trickle in.
Make sure to use browse.feddit.de to see if there is already a community before creating your own. We also don’t want to fragment and make the main communities harder to find.
This really needs more awareness. Today I searched for a specific game (Honkai Star Rail) and found one, then a second popped up a few minutes later on a different instance. Hardly anyone is on either, but it’s a thing that people need to consider before just making a new one. Especially moving forward.
Since I imagine this is going to be a chronic problem for the Fediverse I wonder if there’s a technical solution, like multireddits. If I find two communities that are identical in content it’d be nice to set my subscription to them to be “merged” so that I see them both mixed together.
There isn’t a solution right now but it’s technically feasible as far as I know.
Thanks for this! What a very useful website! This is all so new and confusing that a centralized list of communities is super helpful. Now it’s just in deciding which instance to actually use your account on, as that I’m not sure. At the moment, I have an account on kbin social and a couple of lemmy communities, although I’m not sure which would be most advantageous to browse everything with. I’m on Android if it helps, and know of the Jerboa app (which seems to primarily use lemmy communities), but it’s definitely not full featured.
Thanks for this. Super helpful for starting out here.
