I get called a lot of things on Reddit, but never bigot or fascist.

Try having openly right-wing leanings, and maybe you’ll understand it. I don’t go around making presumptions about people. But when the person I’m replying to chooses to lead with condescension and sanctimony, then fine. I’ll oblige him and reply in kind. Incidentally, ‘it gets the point across’.

I’d rather the growth here be much more organic and discovery driven, than by a mass exodus of users from another platform all rushing in. Mobile app’s were ‘far’ from being the only reason to leave Reddit.

And it may be better that it ends up this way. Tech people at least in my experience, tend to be more balanced and level headed discussing topics outside of tech, than people who are single-issue, obsessed with other topics.

Most of the changes will happen behind the scenes as they usually do. Reddit rarely conducts it’s extremely underhanded shit out in the open, unless the publicity is going to be unavoidable.

Indeed it is. All I really want is a place where I can intellectually engage with people in good faith, even when people disagree with me; finding it productive, fun and maybe learning a thing or two. Constantly being called a “bigot,” “fascist,” “asshole,” “idiot,” “moron,” really leaves it wanting.

Social media overall has been a net negative for humanity, IMO.

I remember a while ago, I caught a video on YouTube of Joe Rogan and someone else discussing all the ‘great’ and ‘wonderful’ opportunities of social media and the Internet that ‘haven’t even begun’ to be explored yet. It was all the usual highfalutin bullshit about modern technology. None of these technologies when they’re first pitched, are ever sold as something that’s going to negatively impact anyone. But in practice after they’ve been rolled out, all the high minded uses of these things, only ever end up being an afterthought and a footnote to their real uses. Mindless consumerism. Social isolation. Destruction of privacy. Degrading communities. That’s the ‘real’ end product of this stuff.

In fact I was listening to the Darknet Diaries (‘highly’ recommend their show/podcast if you’re a techie) episode with Samy Kamkar from back in the day (1, 2), and he echoed the same sentiment. A lot of his exploits he’s done, he’s tried taking to the vendors only to have them make legal threats against him for his actions. So the next best thing was… you guessed it… essentially doing a controlled release of it into the wild.

I remember I used to fuck with and annoy the shit out of all the users on r/politics. I would make sure I commented something like “Biden 2020 WOO!,” and see my comment escalated all the way to the top of the thread. Then I’d wait about 24/48 hours, go back and edit it to something, like praising Donald Trump, and the comments I got back where hilarious. People demanding I get banned for it. People asking how my comment got to the top of the page. People claiming I was a bot account that paid for upvotes. It was hilarious to watch in real time.

I almost don’t want them to succeed, so the exodus can continue to happen. Then again, I don’t want this place overrun with their overwhelmingly idiot userbase.

I’m not inherently against the idea of advertising. I get why it exists, and I’m all for it. What I resent and have no intention of complying with, are the attempts at identifying me and collecting my data, as a means to ‘manipulate’ me into buying things. And, it also can’t ruin my experience on the site. If advertisements were minimal and invasive, didn’t try installing all kinds of ad/bloat-ware on my machine, you’d never see me making any attempt to protect myself against it.
