I didn’t know api changes means 3rd party apps no longer can show nsfw content. Nobody’s going to pay a subscription and not be able to see stuff that they can see on the official app. Looks like reddit is giving all 3rd party app developers a shitty deal whichever way you cut it.
Yeah I wouldn’t have ever signed up for lemmy if this api thing hadn’t come about. This is my first fediverse experience. I was pissed at reddit, but now I don’t care about reddit one way or another. Lemmy has gained enough users to sustain itself even if there is no more mass migration. There is an active community here that will help lemmy grow organically over time.
Right, but I’ve seen tons of comments that say “I’ll at least use the mobile site instead of your app”. If they do this now, then those people will just leave. Plus, blocking mobile site is a dumb move.

You can replace the “Yeah, I second that” with “Block the mobile webpage and force to use app”, because they just started doing that for some users. I’m not kidding.
This happening in the middle of the API gate seems like a pretty dumb move, even for Reddit.
That’s because fines are hilarious. I propose a ‘jail time’ for companies engaging in wrongdoing. Basically a timeframe for which they can’t operate. For small things they should stop operating for a day/few days/week/months/years with or without a chance for ‘parole’ after a period. Scale up based on the crime. For egregious crimes, it should be ‘life’ without a chance of parole. This would get companies to behave so fast you’ll get whiplash.

There is definitely a thing as a community that becomes too big. I really liked that concept in ‘Sapiens’. For a community to grow much bigger than a couple hundred, there needs to be a common belief, or a common enemy. That is why religion was a crucial element 2000 years ago. Right now, beehaw/lemmy is growing rapidly because of that common enemy, reddit, but the real test is once the reddit thing dies down one way or another.
That might not work as you think it would because the rss feed does not include the discussions. For that you need to visit reddit, and discussions are what make reddit what it is. I’d much rather if they migrate here, but if that’s not possible, at least if we have a bot crossposting stuff from there to here, so that we can have our own discussions going on that topic.
Zelda games are this for me (except Twilight princess, its environment and visuals were depressive to me). Particularly, botw is peak to get lost in.

Yeah I think data hoarder is like the geek/nerd from 90s. They’re (almost) no longer a pejorative, but rather a sort of badge of honor. With how important it is getting to archive data for personal or for public use, I can see data hoarder becoming a badge of honor in the future.
Data hoarders are a weird bunch that is absolutely essential to society. (Speaking as a steam game hoarder who has played less than 5% of the games I’ve bought. I just can’t seem to stop buying games)

May be they already realize it, meaning, they saw all the popular communities already created here, and would much rather stay there as mods.
