I’m just old enough to clearly remember pre-internet life and library use, so the coolest thing my library has in my opinion is the huge catalogue of books available at my fingertips through their app. No physical item to worry about means no risk of late fees either, it just returns itself if I don’t before the rental is up.

There are, like, household tools and stuff available as well as a good catalogue of movies on disc. I avail myself of those now and again, but I constantly have a book or two borrowed. That’ll always be my favorite thing my library has.

Amen, my phone doesn’t do a thing to draw my attention unless someone is actively calling me or I have willed it do so for an extremely limited amount of time.

It feels so natural to toss my phone aside and not touch it again for a couple hours, it seems weird to me there are people that, like, cannot do that without anxiety

Me too. I went there when I was 10 or 11, and as a child all I noticed was how incongruous it was with everything. I wasn’t awed by it, and my parents seemed sort of put out with how I didn’t care for it compared to my sisters.

This is interesting, because I have the same things happen with different reasons behind them. Responding to a joke as though I didn’t understand it was one is something I find internally amusing, and my own sense of humor is pretty dry/deadpan so people do miss sometimes when I’m “joking back” as it were

I think the dividing line is the intensity/frequency, unless one knows one is diagnosed. My coworkers for example pick up on the differences in the way I talk when I’m joking vs sincere pretty quick, and likewise learn that I find some small amusing in being irritating now and again

Came here to say this exact thing. Getting the initial drive to get up and do something can be hard, but taking charge on something is an effective cure to> feeling helpless on what you can’t

I think the mundane perspective and ordinary characters were meant to ground the movie. Most kaiju movies follow elite scientists or squads of soldiers so it’s a bit easier to relate to regular people just bumbling around (and a lot cheaper to film).

See, this is what got me into the theater for Cloverfield, I wanted this movie. It’s a bummer I got it in the form of some particularly jittery found footage. I was hoping for something more akin to those goofy disaster movies, but the disaster is a kaiju; not just in tone, but in how it was shot. As you say, some more spectacle would have gone a long way. That, or to really drill down and get into the “human horror” aspect and maybe make the military/authority figures more antagonistic.

All in all, I guess I’m glad Cloverfield succeeded despite my personal feelings because we got 10 Cloverfield Lane which, while not without problems of its own, I enjoyed much more
